Witalis Martanus - a commander of 1st School Infantry Division (A short biography of polish and soviet general)
Witalis Martanus was born on April 27, 1896 in
Żabłówek, in The Ashmyany County, in The Vilnius Governorate, in a Polish
family. In 1913 he graduated in the city school in Dwińsk. From 1915, he served
in The Imperial Russian Army in a Praporshchik rank. He fought at the First
World War on the eastern front. During the fights he was wounded four times and
concussed four times. In 1916 he graduated in an officer's school[1].
In 1918 he joined the Red Army in mobilization
point in city Luga. He served in several soviet units at West-, East- and Turkestan
front. In Polish-Soviet war in 1920 he a commander of 528th Rifle
Regiment. He was wounded in one of the battles against Polish army. In 1922 he
was decorated with The Order of the Red Banner[2].
After the war he was stay in army, and graduated in the one of the soviet
military academy. He was lives in Tashkent. Whit his ex-wife Vera Vladimirovna
he have a son Rurik Vitalievich (born in
1927)[3].
After German invasion Martanus fought at the
front in rank of colonel and was three times wounded and twice injured. In February
he was he was appointed as head of Machine-Gun
and Mortar School in Arzamas. In February 1944 he was decorated with The Order
of the Red Star[4].
On May 25, 1944, he was sent to serve in the
Polish Army in the USSR. Few days later, on June 3, 1944, he was promoted to Major
General rank. On June 12, 1944, he was appointed the commandant of the Army
Training Center in Ryazan. In the middle of 1944 the Army Training Center in
Ryazan was transformed into Polish Officer's School and located in Rembertów.
Since April 30 to August 28, 1945 he commanded the 1st School Infantry Division
in Skierniewice. In May 11, 1945 he was decorated Order of Polonia Restituta. After
the war he was in group of the firsts soviets officers taken back into The Soviet
Union.
After comeback to The Soviet Union he was appointed as commander of the first machine gun training course in The Higher Officer Course “Výstrel” in city Solnechnogorsk (in Moscow Oblast). He died in 1955 and was buried in Tashkent at the Botkin cemetery[5].
